“Dubliners is truly an amazing collection of short stories . . . When I read and reread Joyce, I feel like I can come back to it a million times plus one and still find something new and enriching in it.” Read A Book Review

'Joyce's early short stories remain undimmed in their brilliance' Sunday Times

“Each of the 15 stories is perfection, culminating in probably the finest short story in English, "The Dead".” Brenda Maddox

“Joyce's Dublin is a village filled with dreamers and chancers whom he placed in a kind of cage” Colm Tóibín The Guardian

DUBLINERS is a book of 15 stunning short stories set in turn of the century Dublin. It includes "The Dead", described by Graham Greene as the finest short story in the English language. James Joyce is considered one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He transformed literature forever with ‘Ulysses’ and ‘Finnegans Wake’ and ‘Dubliners’ is his first masterpiece.

DUBLINERS illustrated edition by James Joyce Literature Fiction eBooks

I downloaded DUBLINERS prior to a visit to Dublin in the Spring and really enjoyed it. Joyce's take on the people of Dublin comes from a place of deep love and respect. His characters are nicely drawn and his descriptions are wonderful. The book has been criticized because of it's open-endedness. These are little slices of life with no real beginning or end. It you need easy conclusions to stories, then - even though this is James Joyce - this may not be for you. But life is not full of complete chapters.

DUBLINERS illustrated edition by James Joyce Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It makes you wonder how he garnered the reputation he has. I read it thirty years ago and had the same reaction--what is all the fuss about?
Beautifully written character sketches of the melancholy people of Dublin. However, I prefer to read stories that actually have a plot and an ending.
A favorite!
Each of the stories in this artful collection is a work of art in and of itself. Highly recommended, it is a must-read for anyone who wants to take a master class in short-story writing. (And, there's no tuition, just learn by example. . . )
Absolutlely brilliant!!! James Joyce has certainly captured the true Irish grit and wicked/evil/sad sense of the working/more often unemployed worker of the early twentyith century. His simple prose mixed with erse/gaelic /irish is literature of the highest level.
Although I found some of his stories weepingly sorrowful I could not put my to sleep until I had completed the relevant story.

Robert Smith, Coffs Harbour, NSW 2450 Australia.
The final story, "The Dead" is sublime. Read the short story, watch John Huston's film version with his daughter, Angelica Huston. A work of art!
Read it before you attempt any of James Joyce' meatier works not because it is of any less value but it is easier to approach.
It helps if you've lived in Ireland to appreciate the nuances of Joyce and his writing.... and many times to 'get' him at all for Americans. Every once and a while you roll over a turn of phrase in The Dubliners that will stick in your memory like a favorite childhood scent, and perhaps be passed down through generations of your family as you repeat it at the dinner table.
There are many words that contain gaps. There many sentences cut off the middle and resumed in the next line. It is deplorable--even for 90 cents. I can't read it.
